An interwoven knit fabric usually seen in a multi-tone cotton blend thread. Houndstooth features an uneven, random and whimsical cross hatch design where the thread takes turns in an over and under weave forming a crooked yet overall lineal rectangle pattern. The pattern exists but appears random and texturized. The cotton blend provides for a comfortable yet durable upholstery with the breathing advantages of natural fiber. History of the Iconic Womb Chair Finnish Modern Furniture Designer Eero Saarinen created the Womb Chair, originally known as the Wombat Chair in 1948. He believed strongly that the whole field of design is all one body. He had three design principles – Function, Structure and being part of the time. The Womb Chair design consists of molded fiber glass shell covered with foam and then upholstered. The chair and ottoman is supported by a bent tubular frame. To increase the comfort, Eero also designed the chair with loose cushions and a coordinating ottoman. It was named Womb Chair because it envelops allowing you to curl up and relax in comfort. Eero Saarinen designed with the human body form in mind. A simple concept yes, but many designers prefer aesthetics to functionality. In nearly every case, a piece of furniture that rises to become a classic has both striking artistic form as well as function. The Womb Chairs organic form is representative of the mid century Scandinavian modernism style of furniture using synthetic materials to create inspired forms. History of the Designer, Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen born 1910 was a Finnish American architect and industrial designer famous for his ability to master varying style. For example, he was accomplished in both simple, sweeping, arching structural curves and seemingly the opposite side of the spectrum, machine-like rationalism. He designed many important pieces of furniture including one of the most famous, the “Womb” chair and ottoman (1948). The “Tulip” or “Pedestal” group (1956), features side and arm chairs, dining, coffee and side tables, as well as a stool. Eero’s designs were extensive, all were highly successful except for the “Grasshopper” lounge chair, which, although in production through 1965, was not a big hit.
